Ramon Ray Recap from the Grow Smart Business Conference

6 Rules for Tech Success

Ramon Ray spoke in the late afternoon at Grow Smart Business Conference, which was sponsored by Network Solutions and the Washington Business Journal. Despite the late hour, his presentation style—he talks fast and loud—energized the audience. I tweeted him that his talk was like an injection of caffeine in my veins.

Afterward his laser talk of 10-20 minutes, people looked at each, nodded their heads, and smiled. This guy can speak AND he laid out his ideas in six points, which made them easy to remember.

My favorite point? Social media is not just hype.

The only way you can get to what you want in life is to follow rules to get there.—Ramon Ray

1. CRM is not email. It’s time to upgrade and rise above stupid one-dimensional email. We have to know who our customers are. It’s time to move what you are doing now to CRM solutions. Example: When you buy a Tom Clancy book, Amazon knows what you might want to buy next.
2. Social media is not just hype. Shame on you for being on social media! Because you are not using it to grow your brand. It’s time to get serious and leverage it as a powerful tool to advertise and grow your biz.
3. Mobility is serious. How many of you stay in your office all day long? Eventually, you have to leave the office…and you must embrace a mobile tech solution. Use mobile to leverage your biz.
4. Do not technologize a bad business process. Don’t just buy technology and shove it into the hands of your employees. First, teach people to do their job right and then you can add tech to it.
5. Outsource. Stop trying to do everything yourself. If you do it yourself to save money, you will lose in the end. Leverage the expertise of others and let THEM do it for you.
6. Invest in technology as an asset in your business.
