WordPress (WP) is, hands down, one of the best content management systems out there. Reason number one to use WordPress is that it’s free. You really do not have to pay one dime to use this outstanding open source software. It’s mind boggling!
Not everyone who visits here is a tech geek, so I’ll explain quickly that “open source” defines software, developed by programming volunteers, that people can use for free.
Now on to the reasons why I think you should at least consider using WordPress to run your website:
1. WP is easy to use;
2. You can choose from thousands of different designs aka “themes” or have one specially created for you;
3. The different WP designs are often offered for free;
4. There’s a WordPress community that can help you with questions;
5. WordPress serves as an excellent content management system;
6. WordPress can be modified to look more like a website than a blog (see http://www.optiniche.com);
7. Search engines love WP and you can get great rankings with it;
8. You can have different users in WP so your assistant can easily add content with whatever level of permission you wish to give him or her;
9. Plugins allow you to post content while you’re sipping margaritas on the beach somewhere else.
I could go on with more reasons, but that’s a good start. I’m working on a series of videos — yes videos, dear readers! — that will give you useful WordPress tips and tricks.

I use to run a website with macwebsitebuilder.com, where I would just login online into my template, enter and edit text…very simple and easy to use and produced a nice looking website.
I felt the need for a more professional looking site with more flexibility for editing content rather than just in the simple block areas of my current template. I have a web design firm finishing up on the site, and they are uploading for me to my new host, Verio, and setting it up for me to edit the sites content using Wordpress.
Now while I know some basic html, I am confused as to how this will work to maintain the site. Do I edit the pages on my computer using the Wordpress program and then upload the page to my host Verio?
Do I login, see my pages and edit content and click save somewhere?
I keep reading places on how easy Wordpress is to use, however for someone with very little experience in now using an ftp for my website, I am confused as to how I edit and maintain my site now with Wordpress.
Thanks for any insight.
Hi Richard,
Thanks for writing. You’ll log into WordPress and then make changes right in the WordPress sytem. It’s user friendly you can “make” HTML by clicking on buttons to bold, to add a link or to make italics.
You should not need to use FTP if you’re only going to be writing. All of your writing can be entered in through the user interface, which looks a lot like a Word document.
Good luck with your site!
